On Friday 10th June 2022, The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust will be hosting a free Mortuary talk and ‘virtual’ tour with Nikki Drew, APT (Anatomical Pathology Technician) and Mortuary Service Manager and Michelle Hoyle Mortuary Manager at the Royal Oldham Hospital.  The talk will give people the chance to find out more about the mortuary and the service provided.

The Royal Oldham mortuary is a modern state of the art facility which was opened in 2007. This is one of the busiest Mortuaries in the area. It deals with over 6,000 deaths per annum. The Mortuary Service carries out approximately 1500 coroners’ post-mortems per annum and approximately 400 Forensic post-mortems per annum.

The Mortuary Service comprises of The Mortuary at The Royal Oldham with body stores at the other sites. As well as being a hospital and public mortuary, it is also the Forensic Mortuary for the whole of Greater Manchester, dealing with suspicious deaths.

The Royal Oldham Mortuary is also the mass fatality mortuary, for the Region which means if there is a major incident anywhere in the Northwest Region, the mortuary will be handed over to the Police to deal with any fatalities. The mortuary staff will work alongside them to ensure that the crisis is dealt with professionally, efficiently, and compassionately.

The Mortuary Facility has been used for filming of drama series for example ITV’s drama Scott and Bailey and Traces.

This event is a talk and virtual tour of the department.

The talk will be held on Friday 10th June, 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm, in Room F17, The Education Department at the Royal Oldham Hospital.  The event free and is one of a series of ‘Your Health Matters’ events arranged to give our members, the public and staff a greater insight into their local hospital and the services it provides.
