“Empowering a person to achieve their goals is beyond rewarding”

13 October 2022

This World Sight Day, we are reminding people about the importance of eye health and looking after your sight.

Did you know that nearly everyone will experience an eye health issue in their lifetime and more than a billion people worldwide do not have access to eye care services?

This year’s #LoveYourEyes campaign (13 October) is all about being aware of your own eye health and encouraging everyone to get a sight test or recommend others do the same.

Our Salford Care Organisation Sensory Team provide vital support to members of the community with sight loss or impairment.

Here we introduce Gav Davies, Rehabilitation Officer for Visual Impairment (ROVI), Sensory Team, Adult Social Care.

He tells us more about his role and why he finds it so rewarding:

“I value and enjoy my role as a Rehabilitation Officer for Visual Impairment (ROVI) on many levels. Observing positive outcomes after actioning agreed and delivered holistic and creative input to empower a person to achieve goals in areas of visual need safely and independently is beyond rewarding.

“I’m always inspired by the resilience of an individual I am working with. I am merely joining a person living with sight loss partially on their journey; chipping in with my knowledge and skills where appropriate to somewhat guide the path travelled.

“The safety and independence that can be achieved through rehabilitation has opened up so many avenues for people from travelling freely with confidence, independent daily living, accessing, networking, engaging within the community and wider.

“Being able to make our own decisions and maintain control of our own lives is invaluable, this is the mentality behind my career choice and desire to offer people with a visual impairment the same opportunity.”
