Patient Safety Guide – making healthcare more accessible for you

4 May 2023

The Patient Safety Guide is a new approach to accessing healthcare and is also available as a handy app.

The first-of-its-kind, free guide, can help you decide on the most appropriate way to access healthcare. For example, whether you should visit a pharmacist, book a GP appointment, or visit A&E.

It also provides guidance on how to plan and things to think about when you are going into or coming out of hospital.

There are suggested questions to ask, and space to make notes both before and after an appointment. Information around any tests that may be recommended can be logged in the guide and it can be used as a place to list all the medications you are taking.

The guide is available to download from a dedicated website and via an app for iOS and Android phones. It includes specific advice for people with hearing loss and there is a version for people who have vision impairment.

The tool was developed by patients, carers, GPs, pharmacists and researchers from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Greater Manchester Patient Safety Research Collaboration (GM PSRC) and in partnership with the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust. Research is being led by patient safety experts based at the universities of Manchester, Nottingham and Leicester.
