Marking Windrush Day

22 June 2026

To mark Windrush Day, we want to recognise and celebrate all our NHS colleagues who are connected to the Windrush story and the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush to the UK 78 years ago. From the first generation who answered the call to help rebuild post-war Britain, to the generations that have followed, we thank you for your invaluable contribution to the NHS and to the communities we serve.

As we remember the arrival of the Empire Windrush on 22 June 1948, we also recognise the wider Windrush Generation and the lasting legacy they have created. Their dedication, compassion and commitment helped shape the NHS from its earliest days and continue to influence and strengthen our health service today.

Windrush Day is an opportunity to reflect on this rich legacy, celebrate the diversity that makes the NHS stronger, and thank all those whose hard work, resilience and service have helped build the NHS.

From the first generation to future generations – thank you for everything you do for our patients, communities and colleagues.
