Salford's stoma wellbeing day: Providing connection, confidence and care

22 January 2026

The Salford Royal stoma care nursing team hosted a stoma health and wellbeing day for patients, bringing together ostomates (those who have had stoma surgery), their families and carers for a supportive and uplifting day of connection, learning and encouragement. The event highlighted the importance of navigating life after stoma surgery and offered reassurance that no one has to do so alone.

The day featured a range of guest speakers who shared practical advice on topics including high-output stomas, preventing urinary infections in urostomies, and eating and drinking with a stoma. Attendees valued the opportunity to ask questions openly in a safe, supportive environment and to learn about the latest innovations in stoma care.

Representatives from patient associations were also invited to share hands-on demonstrations and personal stories. Their honest and heartfelt accounts of recovery, adjustment and renewed confidence were among the most powerful moments of the day, reinforcing the message that living with a stoma does not limit the ability to live fully. These shared experiences highlighted how acceptance and understanding grow stronger when people come together.

Throughout the day, the stoma care team were on hand to offer expert advice and one-to-one support, helping attendees explore solutions tailored to their individual needs and discover options to improve comfort and quality of life.

The event was well attended by patients from across the North West, as well as colleagues from within the organisation, showcasing the dedication and commitment of the Salford Royal stoma care nursing team. Beyond its educational value, the wellbeing day served as a powerful reminder of the importance of connection and shared experience.

Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive, with one patient describing how comforting it was to meet others who truly understood their journey.

The stoma care team would like to thank everyone who contributed to making the day such a success. If you would like more information on the event contact stomacare@srft.nhs.uk.
