The Paediatric Physiotherapy Team sits within the wider Children’s Integrated Community Health Services and is and is based at Callaghan House in Heywood. We provide a specialist service to children and young people up to the age of 16 years, or 19 years if they have special educational needs or disability and are in full time education.
They need to be registered with a doctor in Heywood, Middleton or Rochdale.
We provide rehabilitation, self-management support and treatment for a wide variety of conditions and disabilities which impact on physical functions such as mobility, muscle strength, range of movement and balance.
Conditions may include:
- Neurodisability e.g. Cerebral palsy or head injury
- Musculoskeletal or orthopaedic conditions e.g. rehabilitation after a broken bone
- Developmental delay
- Neuromuscular conditions e.g. muscular dystrophies
We also support parents and carers.
We aim to reduce the impact of physical impairments on a child’s growth, development and social interaction. Physiotherapy care is specific to the needs of each child or young person and their family and encourages them to be as independent as possible.
Physiotherapy may include the following:
- Assessment and treatment of a child or young person's postural, physical and mobility skills
- Home and school therapy programmes
- Postural management programmes
- Advice, education and support for parents, carers and schools
- Supporting a child to reach their developmental milestones such as crawling and walking
- Providing mobility and postural equipment
- Formal reports on children's and young people's physical mobility, as required
- Working in partnership with other professionals and agencies, including parents and carers, to ensure a fully joined up approach to a child’s care
- Signposting and referral to other services such as the eye service orthopaedics, child development team and charitable organisations such as Barnardo's
Our neuromuscular specialists also provide:
- Community based care for children with a neuromuscular condition
- Respiratory care and development of chest management programmes, to help avoid a hospital admission
- Physical, emotional and social support to help the child to manage their condition, to co-ordinate their care and support the move from children to adult’s services.
