Peri-operative care covers all phases of peri-operative care, from the time people are booked for surgery until they are discharged. Perioperative care pathways are essentially the combination of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of care.
The Peri-Operative Care footprint incorporates of Pre-op, SAL/DSU, Theatres and Recovery and anaesthesia.

Pre-operative clinic
During your preop we determine if you are physically fit enough to have surgery and if needed the anaesthesia is assessed. You will be asked about your health, medical history, and home circumstances. This appointment will be either via telephone or face-to-face. It also involves recording your height, weight, blood pressure and MRSA swabs, blood tests and possible other tests such as a tracing of your heart.
Day case/ Surgical admissions lounge
Day case surgery is the admission of selected patients to hospital for a planned surgical procedure, returning home on the same day. Surgical admissions lounge is the admission of selected patients to hospital for a planned procedure but may require staying in and be transferred to a ward post operatively.
We currently have 43 beds working over four departments.
You will be seen by nurses, consultants and various members of our theatre teams throughout your stay on DSU/SAL. You may have bloods, scans, and tests, checklists completed with you on your stay.

We provide surgery for a variety of specialities including major complex Neurosurgical and Spinal Surgery, Renal surgery, Pain Service, complex ENT procedures, Neuro X Ray including a 24-hour stroke service, MR Scan supporting scans for complex patients requiring general anaesthetic, General surgical procedures including upper and lower GI, gynaecology and urology, Orthopaedics, as well as two 24-hour emergency theatres.
Salford care org is one of the largest neurosurgical centres in the UK, carrying out some of the most complex neurosurgical procedures in the country. Salford also leads on Intestinal failure reconstruction in the UK and is one of the leading hospitals for surgery and development including investment in robotic surgery.
The new £68 million Greater Manchester major Trauma hospital is due to open May 2023, this will add an additional 5 emergency theatres. This state-of-the-art building will have a floor dedicated to innovative surgery and will house five new emergency theatres, including the UK’s first hybrid trauma theatre.
This will be a central hub for 90 percent of major trauma operations across Greater Manchester, providing support for people involved in serious incidents such as car crashes or life-changing falls.
Recovery
After surgery, you'll be moved back to the ward (after local anaesthetic) or a recovery room (after general anaesthetic or an epidural), where you'll be told how the operation went.
In our recovery unit we have 23 bedspaces across 2 levels
Anaesthetics
The department provides anaesthetic services for large university teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre including preoperative assessment, CPEX, anaesthesia, critical care and pain relief.
We are one of the largest departments in the hospital consisting of more than 60 consultant anaesthetists, 4 Specialty doctors in anaesthesia and 6 Anaesthesia Associates.
We work with a team of nurses, operating department practitioners, support workers and an administrative team that deliver anaesthetic services both in theatres and across other settings in the hospital.
Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET)
Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) is a non-invasive method used to assess the performance of the heart and lungs at rest and during exercise.
This is an ECG that is carried out whilst you are exercising to see if your heart changes. Your blood pressure will be measured at the same time.
What does the test involve?
During the CPET test the patient will be required to perform mild exercise on an upright bicycle whilst breathing through a mouthpiece. Each breath will be measured to assess how the body is performing. The capacity and strength of the lungs is measured before and during exercise. The heart tracing (ECG) will also be recorded prior to, during and post exercise.
The CPET test will lasts for a total of 40 minutes; however, the patient will only be required to exercise for approximately 10 minutes. The test requires your maximum effort to ensure the most reliable diagnostic information is obtained.
