Posture & Mobility Centre (Wheelchair Services) - Bury Community, Heywood, Middleton, Rochdale (HMR) Community

The Posture and Mobility Centre (PMC) is a wheelchair equipment service for clients who have a GP in the Bury or Rochdale area. We have a strict commissioned remit for this provision. Please see drop down boxes below to find out more.

PMC can only provide to people who are registered with a HMR or Bury GP.

PMC are commissioned to provide a wheelchair when:

  • It is needed as a client’s primary form of indoor mobility at home or; 
  • It is required to access statutory education/ paid employment/ formal day centre provision for 15 or more hours per week

As long as this commissioned criteria is met we assess and support clients of any age and with any diagnosis

If you are not known to our service, you will need a referral completing by:

    a) a registered medical professional e.g. doctor / nurse or;
    b) a registered health care professional e.g. physio / occupational Therapist

Once the referral is completed, they will need to send this to our service as guided on the referral form

Free parking is available directly outside the building for both blue badge and non-blue badge holders or there is free on road parking available also.

For any clinical input we will advise whether we need to see you within our clinic or within a community setting. This is determined by clinical assessment need. If you are feeling unwell before your assessment with PMC please call to let us know.

If we are seeing you within a community setting, we will guide whether we are visiting in the morning or the afternoon. If it is a morning visit, we will usually arrive sometime between 9.30am - 11.30am and if it is an afternoon visit we will usually arrive sometime between 1.15pm - 3.30pm. During the visit if it is an initial assessment, we will check your demographic information, we will discuss anticipated use of a wheelchair, we will discuss clinical information relevant to your wheelchair needs, we may complete a postural assessment if this is required and we may need to measure your home.

Please note - your clinic or home visit could be completed with one or two members of the PMC team and they could be male or female. Please contact us if you have any concerns before your clinical input. If you require a chaperone when you attend our clinic, please advise this at reception.

If, after your assessment with PMC, you meet our criteria for provision you will be offered a number of options in terms of wheelchair funding:f, after your assessment with PMC, you meet our criteria for provision you will be offered a number of options in terms of wheelchair funding:

Option 1: Personal Wheelchair Budget NHS Wheelchair will be provided No cost to you All repairs are carried out by the NHS
Option 2:Personal Wheelchair Budget with contribution NHS Wheelchair will be provided but with added upgrades chosen by you No cost for the NHS Wheelchair but the additional upgrade costs are paid for by you All repairs are carried out for the items provided by the NHS. Any upgrade repairs will be at your cost. 
Option 3: Third Party Personal Wheelchair Budget Following assessment, you identify a wheelchair from the retail market which suits your assessed needs You will receive a wheelchair budget which is calculated to the value of the wheelchair that would have been issued to you by the NHS. This includes a maintenance contribution. Any costs over this are to be paid for by you.  All repairs are your responsibility. The chair is expected to last you for 5 years. (3 years for children).
