Gastroenterology - Gastroscopy aftercare following sedation

Please do not drive your car, operate any machinery, drink any alcohol, or sign any legally binding agreements for 24 hours after your examination.

You may feel that your throat is a little sore. This is nothing to worry about and will pass within 24-48 hours.

If you experience any severe pain in your neck, chest or abdomen, or experience any breathing difficulties, then you should report this to your General Practitioner (this is very rare).

If you vomit any dark or red blood you should go directly to your nearest Accident and Emergency Department (this is very rare).

Details of the results and any necessary treatment should be discussed with your General Practitioner, who will have been sent a copy of your report immediately following your procedure.

Please allow 4 working days for post to be delivered before contacting your GP.

Biopsy results may take up to 14 days to arrive at your GP’s.
