What is the Pennine Lung Service?
We are an Integrated Respiratory Team who look after patients with varying Respiratory conditions.
These conditions include:
- COPD
- Bronchiectasis
- Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)
- Asthma
What is COPD?
COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. It describes a group of lung conditions that make it difficult to empty air out of the lungs because the airways have become narrowed.
Chronic = it’s a long term condition
Obstructive = your airways are narrowed
Pulmonary = it affects your lungs
Disease = it’s a medical condition
What is Bronchiectasis?
Bronchiectasis is a long-term condition that affects the airways in your lungs. If you have bronchiectasis, your airways are widened and inflamed with thick mucus, also called phlegm or sputum.
Your airways may not clear themselves properly. This means mucus builds up and your airways can become infected by bacteria. Pockets in the airways mean that mucus gets trapped and is likely to get infected.
What is Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)?
There are more than 200 different ILDs. Interstitial lung diseases cause scarring or inflammation in your lungs or a mix of both.
Some mostly cause scarring or inflammation, but often there is a combination of both.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a very common long-term lung condition. It affects the airways that carry air in and out of your lungs.
The Pennine Lung Service provides the following:
- An early supported discharge service to reduce your length of hospital stay and support you in your home environment after discharge
- Acute care to manage flare ups at home and avoid hospital admission
- Community based respiratory clinics
- Encouragement of self-management and your/carer involvement in decision making, including an individualised care plan to support your needs
- Regular pulmonary rehabilitation exercise programmes which are in partnership with Oldham Community Leisure to benefit the wider population with lung problems
- Virtual Ward Service provides a home monitoring kit to enable an early supported discharge for patients with COPD, Community Acquired Pneumonia or Covid 19. Regular monitoring supports and reassures patients and reduces the risk of readmission to hospital
