Event details

21st September 2022, 2:00pm to 3:00pm

Fairfield General Hospital is inviting local people and trust members to join them for a free talk to find out more about Inflammatory Bowel Disease on Wednesday 21st September 2022, 2 – 3 pm.

The free event part of our ‘Your Health Matters’ series of talks and tours which aims to give members an insight and learn more about various conditions, treatments and services offered at the NCA. Not only will you hear from a wide range of hospital services, but also from community and social care services that are providing care for people close to their own homes and how to support you and your loved ones health and wellbeing.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a complex and so far incurable condition that has a major impact on patients’ lives. More than 300,000 people in the UK have ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, its most common forms, and it’s becoming more common. Symptoms usually include pain, cramps or swelling in the stomach, recurring or bloody diarrhoea, weight loss and extreme tiredness.

People of any age can get IBD. It is usually diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40 but older onset IBD, which is usually diagnosed at or above the age of 60, is sometimes misdiagnosed. Anyone affected by IBD may also have a higher risk of developing bowel cancer.

The talk will be hosted by international expert Professor Jimmy Limdi, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Prof Limdi, said: “We want our patients to have the best understanding of IBD and access the best treatment available, including research opportunities which offer the most cutting edge IBD therapies.  This is an opportunity for patients to learn more about their condition, the treatments available now and our hopes for the future through the research studies we are conducting.”

The talk will also include:

  • A potential role for diet in IBD
  • Early diagnosis and use of effective therapies to ‘target’ the symptoms
  • Novel treatments and how they can be used for patient benefit

Lead IBD Clinical Nurse Specialist Jo Taylor will also be at the event to explain what specialist nurses do and how they assist in providing high standard care.

The free talk will be held on Wednesday 21st September, 2.00 pm – 3.00 pm in the Social Club (Opposite wards 29 and 30), Fairfield General Hospital, Rochdale Old Road, Bury, BL9 7TD

The event is free and open to all, but we do ask you to reserve your place by emailing membership@nca.nhs.uk or calling 01706 517302. Please also let us know if you have any special requirements and if you have any ideas or suggestions for future events/topics, please let us know.
