18 March 2026

Choices for Living Well (Killelea), delivered in partnership between Bury Council and the Northern Care Alliance NHS Trust, has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), with exceptional scores for Effective (92%) and Caring (95%) care.

Inspectors praised the service’s integrated multi‑disciplinary team — including NCA physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, and consultant geriatricians — for providing seamless, evidence‑based rehabilitation. Residents benefit from coordinated consultant ward rounds, personalised therapy plans, and a strong commitment to the FREDA principles of fairness, respect, equality, dignity and autonomy.

The 36‑bed facility offers a therapy hub, assistive technology, and community‑focused spaces such as a bistro café. Innovative partnerships, including intergenerational art sessions with local schools, help residents rebuild confidence and independence.

Residents and families consistently described the service as safe, supportive, and life‑changing. Inspectors highlighted multiple successful outcomes, from rapid recovery after hip fractures to individuals regaining mobility and returning home sooner than expected.

The CQC commended the service’s inclusive leadership and positive culture, noting that staff feel valued, supported, and empowered to speak up. NCA clinicians described Killelea as a place where people “have the best chance to improve.”

Michelle Wheatley, Registered Manager at Killelea, said: "Residents are receiving truly exceptional care from our dedicated teams. We're proud of our integrated approach with NHS partners, which delivers real recovery and independence for people using our service."
