Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) has partnered with Goofus Theatre, a charity-based organisation, to bring a series of powerful performances to patients living with dementia.
During Dementia Awareness Week, the theatre company visited hospital sites across the NCA to deliver their signature sensory performances on our dementia dedicated wards. Blending puppetry, mask, music, and play, the shows are part of Goofus’s acclaimed REACH programme that is designed to connect with people across all generations and abilities through non-verbal, immersive theatre. e.
Jon Jones, NCA deputy head of patient and service user experience, said, “We are extremely fortunate to partner with Goofus Theatre to bring a series of magical theatre experiences to those living with dementia on our inpatient wards. The team brought joy, laughter, and smiles to everyone they met.
"We are extremely lucky to have friends like The Goofus and pride ourselves on being their only hospital Trust partner."
The REACH programme is central to Goofus Theatre’s mission, taking intimate, interactive performances to those who need it the most. There is no script, just music, imagery, and moments of pure, human interaction.
Emma Ramsdale, NCA dementia care advanced practice nurse said: “Participation in these activities can improve socialisation and engagement between the person living with dementia and care staff. Using a non-verbal inclusive approach, the Goofus performances are so valuable for a person living with dementia who may have difficulties with memory skills. This type of performance also helps to reduce the stigma and social isolation people living with dementia may experience.
"Thank you to everyone at Goofus for allowing us to give our patients a special treat.”
Paul Barnhill, artistic director at Goofus Theatre added: “This is our second year working with the NCA, and we’re thrilled to return. REACH isn’t about audience numbers, it’s about meaningful, personal exchanges.
“We have experience of creating shows for those living with dementia and it is heartwarming to see the impact it has. We believe performance should have no borders with our work designed for all backgrounds, ages, and abilities.”
