Inspiring patient stories shared at epilepsy surgery education event

30 May 2025

The NCA epilepsy surgery team hosted their second patient education event welcoming 32 patients, carers and family members at various stages of their epilepsy surgery journey.

Following feedback from the first patient education event, the epilepsy surgery team, who are based at Salford Royal, invited even more patient speakers to share their experiences.

The team were honoured to have Anthony Williams in attendance, a patient who underwent successful surgery at Salford Royal 23 years ago. Leilah Applegarth shared her more recent experience of undergoing epilepsy surgery, as well as Jade Evans who talked about her slightly more complex journey to seizure freedom. Lily Wyatt (pictured) told her story via video and discussed how her quality of life has improved following vagal nerve stimulator (VNS) implantation.

It was a day of shared experiences and positivity. While epilepsy surgery isn't an appropriate treatment for everyone, it aims to reduce or even stop seizures, improving a patient's quality of life.

Following further overwhelmingly positive feedback, the team is now planning biannual events to enable more patients to benefit.

One patient attendee said: “This has massively helped with my decision making for the operation. Thank you all so much. Without today my decision making would have gone on months later. Thank you so, so much!”
