MBE for record-breaking NCA critical care nurse and Army Reservist

27 June 2025

NCA critical care nurse and Army Reservist John Thornhill has been awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the King’s 2025 Birthday Honours.

This is in recognition of his exceptional voluntary contributions to the ex-service community. John has served as the National Parade Marshal for the Royal British Legion (RBL) since 2020, a role of significant national importance traditionally held by retired individuals with decades of ceremonial experience.

At just 31 years old, John is the youngest person in living memory to be entrusted with this ceremonial position. He has led the coordination and presentation of standard bearers and parade marshals at iconic state events including the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles III. His meticulous planning, deep respect for tradition, and commitment to excellence have ensured the flawless execution of high-profile ceremonies watched by millions worldwide.

Despite the demands of his full-time role in critical care and his military service, John has voluntarily supported over 2,000 RBL standard bearers and marshals across the UK. His leadership has been instrumental in building a cohesive and professional community within the Legion, one that continues to uphold national remembrance with pride and discipline.

“Being appointed the National Parade Marshal of the Royal British Legion has been the greatest privilege” said John. “I am deeply honoured to be able to contribute to Remembrance and the Armed Forces community. It reflects not just my efforts, but the dedication of everyone who gives their time to ensure our veterans and their families are never forgotten.”
