Meet Professor Dame Robina Shah

18 July 2023

Over the past few months, you have got to know a little more about some of the members of our Board of executives and the importance of the work of the Board and the decisions they make.

Meet Professor Dame Robina Shah who joined us as a non-executive director last year. Robina is a Professor of Medical Education and Psycho-social Medicine at the University of Manchester Medical School. Robina was awarded the title of Dame of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2023 New Year Honours list.

On what drives her into health and care related roles Robina said: “It’s the caring and compassionate environment, the compassionate leadership that underpins that. The opportunity and the privilege to serve our patients, our carers, our families, our colleagues, the people that we support and work with in the wider community.”

In 2015, she co-authored Tackling Disability Hate Crime and Disability Discrimination. Her recommendations became the basis of the 2016 Government strategic action plan on hate crime, requiring full implementation by local government, the police and NHS.

Robina outlines the priorities of the Board as ‘absolutely about our people.’

She said: “To make sure that our people, our colleagues, the people who experience our services are supported, are looked after, are engaged with. That they recognise that decisions we make, we make on their behalf because we have taken them into account.”
