Meet The Team: The Hulton Building

1 June 2023

The Hulton Building, The Royal Oldham Hospital’s £28m extension for high risk and emergency general and colorectal surgery will be opening in less than 6 months.

The envelope to the facility is now complete externally with work on the inside taking place at speed ready for its official opening later this year.

We met with Stuart Turner, the site construction manager, to find out more about this exciting new building for Oldham.

Stuart has been working on the site since demolition work began and he is very much looking forward to seeing the building in its full glory. He is familiar with The Royal Oldham Hospital site, having previously worked on the construction of the new maternity unit.

He said: “As the project comes to a close, I am looking forward to finishing off the inside work on the floors, walls, the fixture, and fittings so that we can handover the building to begin the moving in process.

“I have been working on the site for 20 months and it has gone incredibly quick. It is always satisfying to see a completed building with the next few months being spent on the final additions and finishing touches. There are lots of tiny details that have gone into the design of the building, and we are confident that they will make a positive difference to the patient experience.”

When asked what his favourite part of the building was, he commented: “The approach to the new unit is impressive and something that I am proud of. There are lots of windows and that adds to the look of the building providing lots of natural light inside and provides a view to the courtyard. I am sure that visitors will enjoy the environment we have created, and we are hoping that it helps in their recovery by providing a space that is calm and relaxing.”

Thanks to Stuart and his team for all their hard work. They have worked through some challenging times, including having to deal with unpredictable weather conditions and the pandemic.

The new building is planned to open to patients in October 2023.
