Pawsome pooches fetch Mayor’s Citizen Award

19 May 2025

Our adorable and friendly pets as therapy dogs and their handlers have been recognised for their volunteering heroics receiving the Ceremonial Mayor’s Citizen Award.

This award recognises the outstanding contribution to the city of Salford making a huge difference to countless patients, their families and colleagues around Salford Royal Hospital.

Therapy dogs and their handlers help put a smile on people’s faces and bring comfort and joy to people who are often going through a tough time.

They often help boost morale for all those they encounter and can help reduce loneliness for people who may not get many visitors.

Shirley Wallwork, volunteer site co-ordinator at Salford Royal Hospital, said: “The work of our volunteer pet therapy dogs and their handlers cannot be understated. They bring so much happiness in such a short space of time to all they come across during their visits to the hospital. I am thrilled the team have had this recognition.”
