IV Therapy Service provides intravenous treatment with the community setting. The service helps to:
- prevent hospital admissions by enabling people to have care closer to home.
- reduce the length of stay in hospital by facilitating early discharges.
- provides further support in managing long term infections/conditions effectively and efficiently within the community.
The service is a 7-day service available from 07:30 to 20:00, including bank holidays.
The service provides intravenous medications to people who are 18 years and over.
Treatment is administered either within the team’s clinic based at Butler Green IV clinic, or a person’s own home if the person has limited mobility.
The team work closely with a consultant microbiologist and an antimicrobial pharmacist to ensure every individual receives the most appropriate treatment, which enables the team to accept people who have complex medical needs.
Once a referral has been received, it will be triaged by the team to ensure the medication can safely be administered in the community. Following this triaging process, the team will contact the referrer to confirm if the patient has been accepted under the service, and to confirm the start date.

Due the nature of the service, referrals must be made by a health professional such as GP or consultant (either ward or clinic based) as clinical responsibility remains shared between the referrer and the team’s consultant microbiologist for the duration of the time the patient remains on the team’s case load.
