Dermatology - Salford Royal

The Dermatology Centre at the Northern Care Alliance offers a full range of dermatology services and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

The Centre is involved in the development of dermatology services across Greater Manchester and our medical and nursing team provide general dermatology services as well as specialist outpatient and inpatient services. We care for approximately 13,000 new outpatients annually, with a further 26,000 follow up appointments. We aim to provide the highest achievable standards of care.

The centre is recognised as having one of the top dermatology clinical and basic research programmes in Europe and has strong academic links to Manchester University and The Christie. We are at the forefront of exciting, pioneering research in skin disease.

Clinics in the department are Consultant led, and you may be seen by another member of the team including Resident Doctors, Specialist Nurses, Specialty Doctors, GPwER (GP with Extended Role), or a Physician Associate. You should bring a list of your medications, including any creams and over the counter treatments. It may be useful to bring details of any previous Dermatology treatments you have had.

On your first visit you may be asked to change into a gown so that all of your skin can be assessed, chaperones are available .

If skin surgery is required, this may be carried out on the day in a one-stop clinic where capacity allows, or you may be asked to return on another date.

You may be required to attend follow up visits dependant on the required treatment or investigation, such as for patch testing or phototherapy.

If you have been referred with a growth on the skin, you may attend a “TeleDermatology” appointment, where you will attend for a photograph to be taken which will then be assessed virtually. You may then either be discharged to your GP or asked to attend the department in person for further assessment.
