Vascular Surgery - Royal Oldham

We are a well led, patient focused team which aims to provide personalised, high quality, evidence based, safe services that are delivered in a compassionate way. We work in collaboration with other relevant specialties and community services to provide seamless care.

Vascular surgery is a specialty dealing with diseases affecting the vascular system including diseases of arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels. Many patients referred to a vascular specialist do not require surgical or radiological intervention, but rather reassurance and lifestyle advice, coupled with measures to reduce their future risk of heart disease and stroke.

Patients requiring vascular surgery suffer from many vascular disorders where there is a risk mortality or that adversely affect quality of life, such as aortic aneurysm, stroke, transient ischaemic attack, ulcers, gangrene, rest pain, and intermittent claudication.

The Vascular Surgery Department offer advice and intervention on a number of vascular conditions.

The Service holds daily clinics across the sites of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Trust.

Following referral into the Service a Consultation with a Vascular Surgeon will be arranged in an outpatient clinic setting. Following consultation a vascular test may need to be carried out so that a diagnosis and treatment plan can be established.

Below is a list of vascular tests which may be offered subject to clinical assessment.

Surgical intervention may be required following any diagnostic investigation.  The Vascular Surgeon will discuss any suggested treatment plan with the patient back in the clinical setting of the Outpatient Department.

Treatments include:

Vascular surgeons work very closely with vascular interventional radiologists and often carry out procedures jointly.

The team also works closely with both the Community Podiatry Service and Community Diabetic Services and pathways are in place for patients requiring urgent referral into the Service.

Following an accepted referral into the Vascular Service, patients will be offered an outpatient clinic appointment. They will be invited to attend an appointment, where they will have a consultation with a vascular surgeon or a member of their clinical team.

During the Consultation patients will be examined and asked about medications they are taking. It is suggested that patients bring a list of any current prescribed medications.

The Clinician may advise that a diagnostic test needs to be carried out; this may not take place on the day and the relevant Service will make contact directly, so it important that any changes to personal details are kept up to date when attending the hospital.

Following clinical assessment and if it has been agreed that as a patient, an elective procedure is required, a pre-operative assessment appointment will be arranged as part the admission process.
