Emergency and Urgent Care - Adult Sedative Medicines

This leaflet contains discharge advice following your attendance to the Accident & Emergency Department (A&E).

During your time in A&E you were prescribed and given sedative medication.

These drugs may cause:

  • Drowsiness
  • Unsteadiness and loss of balance
  • Poor co-ordination

Some of these effects may last for up to 24 hours. We advise that a family member or friend stay with you for 24 hours.

Because of these after effects of the sedation you should:

  • Be accompanied home
  • Be escorted upstairs
  • Take care when using the toilet or bathroom

Until the effect of the sedation has worn off completely YOU MUST NOT:

  • Be left alone
  • Drive or go cycling
  • Go out walking alone
  • Use machinery
  • Drink alcohol

What you can do after sedation:

  • Eat a light meal
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Take painkillers such as paracetamol if needed
  • Take your regular medicine unless otherwise advised
  • Get plenty of rest

If you have any concerns, please contact/attend the Accident & Emergency Department.
