Gastroenterology - ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatogram) - Post procedure

If you have had a repeat ERCP and/or stent removal, it may be possible for you to go home, as long as you have a responsible adult with you for 24 hours following your procedure. You will be assessed post procedure on the Endoscopy Unit where the decision will be made to discharge you home. Upon discharge it is vital that you adhere to the following instructions.

Due to sedation it is vital that you follow these guidelines for 24 hours post procedure:

• Do not drive
• Do not drink any alcohol
• Do not attend work
• Do not sign any legally binding documents
• Do not operate any machinery
• Do not care for any dependants
• You must have a responsible adult with you for 24 hours

Following your ERCP you may experience some mild post procedure complications:

• Sore throat (this can last for 48 hours)
• Mild abdominal discomfort
• Nausea
• Vomiting

These symptoms may be relieved by taking ginger or peppermint tea/juice. Using a hot water bottle, taking paracetamol and/or lozenges (if required). Please take all medication as directed on pack.

More severe complications are:

• Persistent/increasing abdominal pain
• Vomiting blood
• Respiratory difficulties
• Black faeces
• Failure to pass wind
• Jaundice
• Temperature above 38 degrees
• Severe chest/neck pain
• Difficulty swallowing

These symptoms are rare, therefore will need URGENT medical attention. It is important that you inform your doctor that you have had an ERCP, take your report with you.

You have to remain Nil By Mouth (NBM) (No fluids or food) until the time given by the discharging nurse. This is due to the local anaesthetic given prior to the procedure.

If biopsies have been taken (this will be stated in your report), then you should contact your own G.P. or Consultants secretary 2 to 3 weeks post procedure. No histology results go to the Endoscopy Unit. Any other issues please use these contact details:
