H2 is a twenty-five bedded unit with three additional escalation beds which provides specialist respiratory care for both chronic and acute conditions.
The team would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the ward.
The ward manager is Leane Donoghue-Horrocks who is supported by Sister Jemma Garlick, Sister Tracey Twigg, Sister Natasha Ellison and Charge Nurse Benedict Gyamerah who collaborate with an amazing team of nurses, support workers, the ward clerk and housekeeper.
The ward consists of thirteen side rooms and three separate bay areas, housing four patients in each bay area (five patients when the escalation spaces are utilised). Collaborating closely with the wider multi-disciplinary team, the unit can undertake investigations to support diagnosis and treatment of conditions which require long term airway ventilation such as obstructive sleep apnoea, motor neuron disease or chronic respiratory failure.
Visiting Times/Mealtimes
We welcome relatives and visitors within the unit, however, we do advise against bringing children onto the ward due to the infections present on the ward, to do so would be at your own risk.
Visiting hours are every day between 10.00am to 7.30pm. In addition to this, we provide open visiting hours to people identified as important to patients living with cognitive impairments or learning difficulties. If you have any questions relating to this, please see our ward clerk Phillipa who will happily assist in any query you have.
Falls
We ask that to minimize your risk of falls during your inpatient stay, you arrange to have any walking aids brought in from home and that you wear appropriate footwear. We recommend a full fitting slipper with a back, trainers or alternatively please ask for a pair of our non-slip socks. Unfortunately, flip flops, sliders and mule style slippers are not appropriate forms of footwear on the ward and may cause a hazard.
Bed moves
At times, the nurse in charge may ask you to move from a side room or from one bed space to another bed space, this will be because we need to control infection, closely observe a patient, or provide tender loving care for someone at the end of their life. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause. Alternatively, you may have been admitted into one of our three escalation spaces and we may ask to move you to a different area of the ward once a bed space becomes available. On the day of your discharge, you may be required to wait in the hospital’s discharge lounge whilst you wait for your medication and transport home.
The team on H2 strive to provide a high standard of holistic patient-centred care, maintaining privacy and dignity and promoting autonomy and respect to all patients and service users. We aim to promote good health and feel it is fundamental to our role to provide all information to support patients to make informed choices about their care.
The Trust has close links with universities and welcomes a large number of students to undertake their training with various medical and nursing teams across the Trust. At times, those students may be working with the teams responsible for your care. We would ask that you enable them to participate in your journey with us to aid their learning and development. However, if you have any concerns about this, please speak with the nurse in charge.
We are very keen to maintain high standards of care for all those patients and service users who come into the unit. However, we appreciate that you may wish to provide feedback or discuss your concerns with the team.
In the event, that you wish to raise any concerns we ask that in the first instance you contact the nurse caring for you. If the nurse is unable to resolve your concerns, please speak with the nurse in charge or ward manager Leane Donoghue-Horrocks (office hours are Monday – Friday 6.45am – 2.45pm) if present and available. If following this you feel as though your concerns remain unresolved, we would ask that you contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). The details of which are available on the Trust website or freely upon request.
Upon discharge we may ask you to complete a survey of your experience as an inpatient on H2, if you need any help completing this, please do not hesitate to speak with one of the nursing team.
