General Surgical Wards - Welcome to Ward B6 at Salford Royal

B6 provides care for all trauma, elective Orthopaedic and plastic surgery patients.

It is a 32 bedded, mixed sex ward, situated on the 2nd floor of the Irvine building, in the blue area at Salford Royal Hospital.

Our aim is to help patients recover safely from orthopaedic injuries and surgery and to promote mobility and independence, allowing you to return home as quickly and safely as possible.

We want you to return home, but sometimes this is not possible, and you may require a further period of rehabilitation before being able to be discharged home. We would then send you for rehabilitation at one of our Salford based Intermediate Care facilities or, if you’re not a Salford resident, an Intermediate Care facility in your home area. This will be discussed with you and your family by the staff on the ward before discharge.

Ward Manager

The current ward manager on B6 is Lois Shawcross, who can be contacted during working hours between 7am - 3pm Monday to Friday. Visiting times are between 10am and 7.30pm.

If out of hours, one of the senior sisters/charge nurses are on duty or you can ask one of the nursing team to take a message and a contact phone number and we will get back to you at the earliest opportunity.

Expectations

As your care provider:

  • We aim to provide the right care at the right time to ensure that your needs are met
  • We will discuss and agree any equipment/support that you may need
  • We will fully involve you in planning your discharge, together with a relative, carer or friend as appropriate
  • When your treatment is complete, it's important that your discharge is not delayed, as this can lead to further health complications because of an increased hospital stay

As a patient

  • Please arrange to have everyday clothing and toiletries brought in for use (we aim to have all patients dressed in their own clothes, where appropriate) during their time with us. Comfy lounge wear, underwear, pyjamas or nightdresses and safe footwear are essential. Shower gel/soap, hairbrush/comb as well as toothbrushes and toothpaste are also advisable
  • We do advise that personal property such as mobile phones/ laptops etc are brought in at your own risk
  • We are unable to heat up any patient’s food as we have no facilities to do this
  • You will need to try and arrange your own transport home, where possible
  • Please let your next of kin know that you’re going home. If you’re unable to get in touch with them, please let the nurse looking after you know
  • Please let us know if you need a medical certificate (sick note)

Infection Control

Due to infection control precautions, the ward is not able to have any balloons, flowers or pot plants at the patient’s bedside. We also advise that any photos, pictures or letters are laminated so that they can be cleaned to prevent any infections.

If there are any covid patients on the ward, then you may be asked to wear a face mask. This is at your discretion and you may refuse, but please do not be rude to staff if asked.

Medication

Medication will be supplied on discharge, but this will be a limited supply. You will need to contact your GP as normal to arrange your repeat prescription. All new medications will be supplied for 14 days.

We will discuss your medication with you prior to discharge. Please don’t be afraid to ask if your medications are different to what you would normally take.

Any questions after discharge can be put to your GP or community pharmacist

Visiting times

Visiting time are daily between 10am - 7.30pm.

Protected mealtimes are between 12.30 and 1.30pm and 5.30pm – 6.30pm. You may be asked to leave during this time unless you’re helping to feed your relative. Open visiting is available for all patients with memory loss or dementia.

It is only 2 visitors to a bed, and you’re requested to use a visitor’s chair rather than sitting on the patients’ beds.
