What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupations (activities) help make you who you are and how you feel about yourself. If you are unable to do the things you want, or need to do, to live and enjoy your life, your general well-being may be affected.

Occupational Therapists are specially trained to work with people to enable them to live as independently as possible in their own homes, reducing risk and promoting quality of life for our patients and their families.

Some areas in which we may work with you:

  • Getting in and out of bed, or on and off the toilet
  • Preparing a family meal, or using cutlery more easily
  • Advice on managing fatigue or brain fog
  • Practising day to day activities
  • Advice regarding returning to work following illness/accident
  • Accessing leisure facilities
  • Playing your full part in your family and community
  • Safe discharge home from respite care

What can we do for you?

Within our team we have specialists in community rehabilitation, rheumatology, palliative care, and long term conditions. As well as therapists, we have technicians who support us to help you.

We help you to overcome problems in different ways such as:

  • Providing advice on different techniques to carry out activities more easily
  • Recommending equipment or adaptations to make activities safer and easier
  • Practicing new techniques to develop strength or confidence
  • Advising family or carers on safer, easier ways to help you
  • Identifying community resources
  • Using activity to overcome the effects of illness or disability

What should I expect?

Our service is open to people aged 16+ who have a Bury GP. We can accept referrals from health professionals, or you can refer yourself by contacting us and completing a self-referral form. We hold a waiting list which is triaged according to level of need.

Appointments are usually carried out in your own home, however, outpatient clinics are also held at Radcliffe Primary Care Centre, for hand therapy and some appointments.

The Occupational Therapist will complete a thorough assessment of your abilities and to identify goals for treatment and rehabilitation with you. The focus of assessment will be function and activities of daily living including Personal Care, kitchen tasks, leisure and work activities.

You will be offered a period of rehabilitation for up to 6 sessions, and your goals will be reviewed as treatment progresses.

All the notes and information the Occupational Therapist holds is confidential; however, it may be shared with other professionals who are involved in your care. You will be asked for your consent at appointments; you are entitled to decline treatment at any time.

We may also access clinical notes from your GP/hospital etc if you consent to this.

Our expectations of you

If you are unable to carry out any of the activities in your treatment plan, please discuss with the Occupational Therapist as an alternative solution may be found. You are responsible for your own involvement in treatment.

If you cannot keep an appointment, please inform the department as quickly as possible, so we can offer the slot to someone else.

If you have a comment or complaint about your experience with our service, please talk to a member of the team first, as we value your feedback and always strive to improve.

Otherwise, ring PALS (Patient and Advisory Liaison Service) Tel: 0161 778 5665.
