Integrated & Community Services - Provision of wheelchairs to Care Home residents

How does Salford Wheelchair Service identify who it can provide wheelchairs for?

Salford Wheelchair Service is supported by local eligibility criteria. Information can be found on the NCA website at www.northerncarealliance.nhs.uk

When will Salford Wheelchair Service provide a wheelchair in a Care Home?

Salford Wheelchair Service will accept referrals for people who:

  • Are unable to mobilise and require a wheelchair to help with independence, by provision of a self-propelling or a powered wheelchair, following assessment
  • Have postural issues that means they cannot sit safely and independently in a standard wheelchair. An assessment will consider providing posturally supportive equipment within the current wheelchair or a tilt in space wheelchair
  • Are at risk when being transported in a vehicle in a standard wheelchair
  • Have pressure care needs and the standard pressure cushion issued by the District Nurses is not appropriate in the wheelchair that the care home has provided

What circumstances within care homes are the Wheelchair Service not able to support?

Salford Wheelchair Service is unable to provide the following equipment:

  • Wheelchairs for ‘portering’ purposes, i.e. transferring residents from room to room etc. within the care home setting. This is the care homes’ responsibility
  • Pressure relieving cushions for use in armchairs
  • Wheelchairs to be used instead of appropriate armchairs or dining room chairs (static seating)
  • Standard wheelchairs to take clients out on outings either by the care home or by members of the person’s family
