Integrated & Community Services - Wheelchair cleaning

Cleaning and Care of your wheelchair

Your wheelchair will operate properly and safely when cared for just like any other vehicle. You agreed to care for it when you signed the Terms of Loan.

Weekly cleaning will:

  • Help prevent the build-up and spread of bacteria
  • Reduce the time taken for an engineer to complete a repair
  • Help you to check for any loose parts, cracks or any other defects
  • Help to keep your wheelchair operating smoothly

Cleaning tips:

  • Clean metal parts and cushions with a soft damp cloth using warm water and a mild detergent. Try a soft damp brush on difficult stains
  • Rinse well with clean water and wipe down with a dry cloth
  • Spray or wipe using an approved disinfectant - e.g. Clinell wipes or Dettol wipes
  • Any cushion covers that can be removed may be washed at 40 degrees with normal washing powder/liquid. DO NOT Tumble Dry
  • Fluff or dust should be blown or dusted away
  • Ensure brakes and wheels are kept clean
  • Never use abrasive, ammonia based, bleach based or spirit type cleaners

Please DO NOT use a pressure washer on your wheelchair.

Please note we can refuse to undertake an adjustment or repair should the equipment be in an unacceptable condition.

Remember to always read the user manual and follow manufacturer instructions.

If you need advice phone the Posture and Mobility Centre on 0161 206 0485.
