Integrated & Community Services - Wheelchair pointers for prevention of pressure ulcers

  • Do not sit for longer than 4 hours without a break – unless you have been advised to sit for a shorter period
  • As soon as able transfer into an armchair/onto the bed
  • Self-pressure relief

☐ Lean to side (if able)

☐ Lean forward (if able)

☐ Lift off the cushion using armrests (if able)

  • If you have an existing pressure area, please speak to the District Nurse for further advice
  • Use the cushion that has been provided with your wheelchair – do not change this for an alternative
  • Put the cushion into the wheelchair the correct way round
  • Do not put a Conti sheet on top of your cushion as this will stop it working correctly
  • If you think you need an alternative wheelchair cushion, please call The Posture and Mobility Centre to request a reassessment on 0161 206 0485

NB - Refer to NCA Prevention of pressure ulcer leaflet for further advice.
