Introduction
Salford Royal Hospital is part of a network of Major Trauma Centres (MTC) across England which treat patients who have suffered a major trauma.
Salford Royal provides around the clock lifesaving treatment for patients, some of who have been seriously injured, following incidents such as a fall, road traffic collision or assault.
Patients who have had a major trauma injury may need surgery/and or care from many specialists and professionals. Salford Royal is a MTC which aims to provide for all your care needs throughout your stay with us.
The Major Trauma Coordinator Team
The major trauma coordinator team is made up of specialist nurses and therapists who you will meet during your time in hospital.
Initially, they will help coordinate your care to ensure you get the right input at the right time. As you continue to recover from your injuries, the Major Trauma Rehab Coordinator and therapy teams will look at and organise this.
What is trauma rehabilitation?
Trauma rehabilitation can help you recover from your injuries and is personal to you. We aim to help you get back to doing your everyday activities. This might involve your family and friends.
The team supporting you with your injuries may include some or all of the following:
- Medical teams, including consultants, doctors and advanced practitioners
- Nurses
- Speech and Language Therapists - Your injuries may make it hard to talk, understand others, or swallow food and drink safely. We can work with you to:
- Help you speak clearly and understand words
- Support your thinking skills like memory and attention
- Help you to eat and drink safely - Physiotherapists - We help people use and move parts of their body following different injuries
- Occupational Therapists - Your injuries may cause changes with how you complete your day-to-day activities. We can work with you to:
- Improve your thinking skills e.g., memory and attention
- Increase your independence completing everyday activities such as getting washed and dressed or cooking meals
- Try to find ways to help you complete activities that are important to you - Psychologists - We can work with you if you are experiencing changes to your thinking skills, mood and behaviour. Sometimes, we can also provide emotional support to your family members, as we know your injuries can have a big impact on them
- Dietitians - Different injuries can make it difficult to eat and drink like you did before, which can affect your health and recovery. We can assess and support this as part of your care
- Social workers/discharge coordinators - We work alongside the team to ensure safe and smooth discharges from hospital
Your recovery matters
Rehabilitation is about helping you live your life again - safely, confidently, and independently. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
When and where will I have my rehabilitation?
Rehabilitation will start as soon as our therapists feel you are ready to work with them, but this may be limited by medical issues.
This will include assessments, treatment and discussions with the team to support your needs. Following this, some people may go home from hospital, but others may need further rehabilitation. This can include going to your local hospital or a specialist rehabilitation ward/centre.
