Neurology - Welcome to the Acute Neurology Unit (ANU)

ANU is a regional neurological unit caring for both male and female patients with a variety of neurological conditions such as:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Epilepsy
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Motor Neurone Disease
  • Encephalitis

The ward consists of 4 bays and 3 side rooms, with a total of 23 inpatient beds.

We also have a 3 Video Telemetry rooms to support with seizure management.

There is a day room available for patients and relatives to use in accordance with infection control precautions. Our day room also leads onto a courtyard/garden area for patients and relatives to use.

Visiting times on the ward

Monday – Sunday 10.30am - 7.30pm.

Please ensure there are only two visitors present at the bedside at one time, and you use the visitor chairs provided. Please do not sit on the hospital beds.

Protected mealtimes are from 12.30pm until 1.30pm and 5.30pm until 6.30pm. During this time, we prioritise nutrition and hydration and ask members of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to avoid assessments in these times.

Ward Manager

The ward manager for ANU is Amber Stewart and there is also an experienced senior team that can support any queries in the managers absence.

If you require a face-to-face meeting or conversation with the Ward Manager, there is availability between 2-4pm daily. Please contact a member of staff to arrange.

Telephone Numbers

The contact numbers for ward ANU are:

0161 206 4586
0161 206 4583
0161 206 2301

We advise that you ring the ward after 10am where possible, as the nursing staff will be completing medication rounds, personal cares and ensuring patients have had their breakfast.

Recommendations

We recommend you bring in some personal clothes such as:

  • Pyjamas
  • Underwear
  • Comfortable clothes for the daytime
  • Safe footwear (please ensure there is a back on your shoes)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Shower gel/soap

We do advise on the ward that any personal property such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops etc are brought in at your own risk.

Due to the nature of the ward, we do not allow any children under the age of 16 on the ward. As advised above, we have a day room to support with this if required.

Please be aware any food brought in and asked to be stored in the patient fridge can only be kept for 24hours, therefore please only keep minimal amounts to reduce waste. We are unable to heat up any food on the ward as we have no facilities for this.

Infection Control

You will be asked to wash your hands on entry to the ward. Please do not be offended if this is challenged by our ward staff; we are working hard to protect our patients from the risk of infections.

Due to infection control precautions the ward is not able to have balloons, fans or flowers at the bedside. We also advise that any photographs, pictures or letters are laminated so that they can be kept clean to prevent any infections.

Patient Experience

We have a Friends and Family survey which collects feedback about your experience with us on the unit. This can be completed via a QR code, or we can provide a paper copy. We would be grateful if you can complete this to support us to develop our services and strive to give the best patient centred care.

We are also happy to take any verbal feedback.
