Neurosurgery - Welcome to the Neuro Short Stay Unit (NSSU)

The Neuro Short Stay Unit is an 18 bedded male and female elective spinal ward with a range of complex and elective spinal patients. We take patients with a wide range of spinal issues/ operations such as:

  • Cervical/Thoracic/Lumbar Decompressions
  • Anterior Cervical Decompression and Fusion (ACDF)
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Cauda Equina
  • Discitis (Infection of the Spinal Discs)
  • Spinal fractures
  • Conservatively managed injuries using braces and collars

The ward consists of 5 bays with 2 or 4 beds in each bay and 2 side rooms.

We have a day room at the top of the ward where patients or patients and their relatives can enjoy and sit together with board games, books or enjoy meals together.

Visiting Times

Visiting is daily from 2pm until 5pm and then 7pm until 8pm.

It is 2 people only at the bedside at any one time. Please do not sit on the patient's bed, use the chairs provided instead.

Protected mealtimes are from 12 noon until 2pm and 5pm until 7pm, you may be asked to leave during these times.

We try to have quiet hour between 4pm and 5pm to give our patients some rest time after a potentially busy and active day. During these times lights may be turned down and any televisions or music will be turned down or headphones to be used.

Ward Manager

The current ward manager on NSSU is Hannah Lawless, who can be contacted on the ward between 7am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

If out of hours, please don’t hesitate to leave a message with one of the nursing team with a contact number and she will get back to at the earliest convenience.

We advise that you ring the ward after 9am as the nursing staff will be completing medication rounds, personal cares and ensuring patients have had their breakfast.

Recommendations

We recommend that as a relative you bring in some personal clothes such as:

  • Comfortable lounge wear
  • Underwear
  • Pyjama’s
  • Safe footwear
  • Toothbrush and Toothpaste
  • Shower gel/Soap

On the ward we do advise that any personal property such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops etc are brought in at your own risk.

Children under the age 10 may not be permitted to visit the ward without Manager’s discretion. Please contact the ward manager to enquire.

We are unable to heat up any food on the ward as we do not have the facilities for this.

Infection Control

Due to infection control precautions, the ward is not able to have balloons or flowers on the ward or at the bedside.

We also advise that any photographs, pictures, or letters are laminated, so that they can be kept clean to prevent any infections.
