Why wear a palm protector?
It will prevent your fingers from digging into the palm of your hand, prevent skin damage and prevent further deformity.
Continued use will also help with keeping the palm accessible to clean the area and prevent further damage.
How to wear the palm protector
Always put the thumb into the palm protector first. Place the strap around the back of the hand and fasten the Velcro. You may require assistance to put on and/or take off the device. It may be uncomfortable or difficult to apply at first, but it will become quicker and easier with practice. Initially it may take time to ensure it is applied properly, if you cannot put it on for whatever reason, please report this to your therapist.
When to wear the palm protector
Palm protectors can usually be worn overnight, and/or during the day, including while mobilising and transferring, once wearing tolerance has been built up. However, your therapist will advise what is suitable for you. Wear your palm protector at the following times:
Hand Care Routine
Remove the palm protector to thoroughly wash and dry your hands daily. Use this time to inspect the area for signs of rubbing or skin damage. Report any damage to your skin to your Occupational Therapist. Keep fingernails short with no rough edges to prevent them digging into the palm of the hand. Each time the palm protector is removed your hand and arm should be put through as full a range of movement as possible. Your Occupational Therapist will advise how to do this.
Looking after the palm protector
Wash the palm protector in mild detergent on a regular basis to keep it clean. Leave to dry naturally, do not tumble dry Ensure the palm protector is completely dry before re-applying it. A second palm protector can be supplied to be worn while the first one is being washed/dried.
