Oral surgery - Instructions for after your Dental Operation - Special Care Patients

After Your Operation

You will have had your mouth checked and teeth cleaned.

Most people will have had teeth repaired and teeth extracted.

Please follow this advice carefully for 24 hours
•    Cool drinks only

•    Soft, light, cool diet

Bowl of ice cream

•    You need someone to help you get home
•    A person needs to stay with you for 24 hours

Have people in your home to look after you


•    No alcohol
•    No smoking
•    No driving
•    No operating machinery
•    No signing any legal documents or look after anybody else for 24 hours

•    No rinsing your mouth

•    No cleaning your teeth

•    Bite down on a clean, rolled handkerchief for 15 minutes

If you are in pain, take pain-relieving tablets, such as paracetamol, as prescribed if required

The day after your operation and for one week have a:

  • Soft, light diet

•    Saltwater mouthwashes after every meal and more frequently if possible
•    Mix one tablespoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gently bathe mouth, no swallowing

  • Start brushing your teeth and gums using a soft toothbrush

  • Use painkillers for relief, if needed
