Physiotherapy - Physiotherapy Amputee Rehabilitation Team Outpatients - Royal Oldham Hospital

As you have been invited to attend the Physiotherapy Outpatients class at The Royal Oldham Hospital following your amputation, this document will explain clearly what you can expect from the amputee exercise rehabilitation class.

Amputee rehabilitation is a comprehensive process aimed at restoring function, mobility, and independence after a limb amputation. The class will begin at 9.30am at the outpatient physiotherapy department.

Outpatient Amputee Rehabilitation involves the following:

  • An initial one to one assessment with a therapist at your first class. This will involve obtaining an up-to-date social history and an assessment of your upper limbs, lower limbs and transfers. Alongside your therapist, you will also set goals that you would like to achieve while attending the class, and your therapist will create a treatment plan to help you reach your goals
  • At each further follow up class that you attend, you will have the equivalent to 30 mins one to one time during the 2 hours session with a therapist. This will involve discussing wound care and look at beginning early walking training within the parallel bars, using what we call the PPAM AID. You can start to practice walking with our equipment before you receive your prosthesis
  • During the class, while awaiting your one-to-one time with a therapist, or following your one-to-one time, you will be expected to partake in self-directed activities independently. These are set up around the gym area and involve upper and lower limb exercises at different stations in the gym
  • To progress your rehabilitation, self-directed exercises are also expected to be completed outside of class, as prescribed by your therapist. If your progress stalls due to a lack of self-activity, then your therapist will have to look at discharging you from the amputee rehabilitation class
  • If you do not attend 3 classes without providing a valid reason, your therapist will also have to discharge you from the amputee rehabilitation class. Please note that cancelling on the day of your class also counts as a “Did Not Attend” unless in exceptional circumstances

By signing on the line below you understand what the outpatient amputee class involves and agree to independently take responsibility for your own rehabilitation during the class and at home with the self-directed activities.
