Physiotherapy - Stretching exercises following surgery or radiotherapy to the breast, shoulder and armpit

All the following exercises should all be performed lying down.

For each exercise, hold the position for a count of 20. Repeat each exercise 10 times.

Exercise 1: Active Assisted Flexion

  • Start with your arm by your side
  • Use your non-affected arm to lift your affected arm forwards above your head, keeping your elbow straight
  • When you get to the end of your range, give a gentle push with your other arm to gain extra movement

Exercise 2 - Angel Wing

  • Start with your arm by your side
  • Leading with your thumb, lift your arm out to the side and continue upwards towards your head

Exercise 3 - Lateral Rotation Stretch

  • Start with your hands behind your head
  • Slowly lower your elbows until they reach the bed
