Respiratory - Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) - Alert Card

Introduction

This leaflet will cover the basics regarding what non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is and what it involves. It will also explain the purpose of the NIV Alert Card which you have been issued by the Sleep and Ventilation Team and how to use this.

How the lungs work

The main function of the lungs is to breathe in and out to allow oxygen into our blood and remove carbon dioxide (a waste gas) from our blood. When the lungs start to fail, this swapping of gases becomes less effective, which causes oxygen levels to be too low and carbon dioxide levels to be too high. This is often referred to as respiratory failure.

What is NIV?

NIV is a machine which uses air pressure to assist you with breathing in and out. It consists of a ventilator machine, some tubing and a special mask which allows the air pressure to enter your breathing system. The machine does not breathe for you; it offers gentle support for each breath you take whilst using it. It is generally worn whilst you are asleep overnight.

The machine settings and mask which you have been given have been specifically tailored to meet your individual breathing requirements.

Why do you need NIV?

NIV is a common treatment which is used in people with chronic lung conditions (or other conditions which affect their breathing) including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Having a chronic lung condition can mean that breathing is more hard work, which can cause your breathing muscles to become tired.

This can lead to respiratory failure. NIV can help to support your breathing by easing the work of your muscles and removing the extra carbon dioxide.

Alert card

You have been issued with an alert card which informs yourself (and healthcare professionals) that you have an NIV machine at home for a known condition. The card has a record of the condition which you use NIV for, as well as the type of device and pressures you usually use. You should always carry your card with you and show it to all healthcare staff that are caring for you.

What to do if you need to go to hospital

If you need to go to hospital, it is especially important that you bring your NIV machine and mask from home with you. If an ambulance is called, you or a family member/carer should show it to paramedics, so that they fully understand your breathing requirements and can bring your machine. It is also important that you show your alert card to medical staff when you get to hospital so that they understand your breathing requirements.
