Royal Oldham Phase 4a Extension

New £28m colorectal and general surgery hub at The Royal Oldham

Building work has begun on the new £28m four-storey extension to the main hospital building at The Royal Oldham Hospital. This follows a public consultation in November 2019 and business case approval in January 2021.

The existing buildings that will be demolished to make way for the new development are K Block and the Adult Medicine Building, and these services will be relocated within the hospital estate.

Inside the new build will be two new 24-bedded general surgery wards (Levels 0 and1) and the creation of a new emergency theatre within the current theatres unit. Each ward will have staff support facilities, spacious patient day rooms and equipped therapy spaces. Ward rooms will be located on southern and western elevations to provide outward looking views for patients and the design will maximise natural light. Levels -1 and 2 will provide ancillary space and a landscaped courtyard will be provided at Level 0 within an internal courtyard.

The new building has been designed with patient wellbeing in mind and the design very much reflects Oldham’s rich industrial mill heritage. The new development is fantastic news for residents in Oldham and Greater Manchester and will allow The Royal Oldham to operate as the hub site for high risk and emergency general and colorectal surgery for the North East sector of Greater Manchester.  Having a new state-of-the-art theatre for emergency and colorectal surgery will allow the hospital’s surgeons to perform at the highest possible level and deliver great quality care for patients in Greater Manchester.

IHP* has been selected as a main contractor for the demolitions, outpatient and Phase 4a development and Parkinson for the theatre.

The works are scheduled be completed by early 2024.

*Integrated Health Projects is a joint venture between Vinci Construction UK and Sir Robert McAlpine
