Integrated & Community Services - Bury Community Speech and Language Therapy

Who are we?

We are a team of Speech and Language Therapists who assess, diagnose, and treat acquired communication and/or and swallowing difficulties for Adults (18+) with a Bury GP.

Why have you been referred to Speech & Language Therapy?

Communication: People may need Speech and Language Therapy to help them to communicate with others, for example after a stroke or due to a neurological or other illness or event.

Swallowing: People may develop difficulties swallowing food, liquid or saliva, due to a neurological event or other illness.

What we do

  • We work closely with you, your family or carers and other health professionals
  • We carry out appropriate assessments and make a Speech and Language Therapy diagnosis

Depending on your individual circumstances we may: 

  • Provide a therapy programme for you or your carers to carry out, or we may carry it out with you
  • Provide advice or make recommendations and communicate these to you, your carers and other health professionals
  • If necessary, we request referral to other professionals
  • We give advice and information to carers and others working in the community
  • We will liaise with other people involved in your care to provide communication advice around mental capacity and decision making 

How to refer to us

Communication

We have an open referral system for communication difficulties. This means anyone can refer themselves to us. GPs and others can also refer people to us.

Swallowing

Referrals for swallowing difficulties need to come from a GP or another qualified health professional.

We accept written referrals by email to buryadultsalt@nca.nhs.uk or SPOA.fax@nca.nhs.uk

We accept verbal referrals by phone for communication only.

Voice

Voice referrals need to come from an ENT consultant.

If you have comments or concerns about the service we provide, you can contact PALS which is a free and confidential service for patients, families, carers and friends.

There are PALS offices located on each of the NCA hospital sites at Fairfield General Hospital, Rochdale Infirmary, Royal Oldham Hospital and Salford Royal Hospital). The PALS departments are open between 9.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
