What is this leaflet about and who is it for?
This leaflet is for the carers of people who have been provided with a helmet by the Orthotics service. It will explain how to care for the helmet and other important information about the Orthotics service. We hope you find this information useful. What does the helmet do?
Helmets provide impact protection for the head of the wearer. The reason for impact protection can vary and will have been explained by the Orthotist and/or Physiotherapist.
What is the entitlement?
The entitlement is for one helmet. A second helmet will only be provided if:
- The original is deemed to be clinically ineffective
- The users daily living activities are regarded as unsafe without wearing their helmet
- If the original helmet is beyond repair
How to put on my helmet?
Before putting the helmet on, please check for signs of damage
- Ensure the chin strap is unfastened
- Ensure you correctly align the front of the helmet to the forehead
- Place the helmet on the wearer’s head, ensuring that the ear loops are correctly aligned over each ear
- Fasten the chin strap so that the helmet is not allowed to move excessively on the head, while being careful to avoid over- tightening of the strap
How should the helmet be cared for?
- Clean the helmet regularly by wiping with a damp cloth, never immerse the helmet in water
- Allow to dry naturally, away from direct heat sources such as the radiator
- You are responsible for looking after the helmet and returning it for repair as and when necessary
What problems should you be aware of?
If you notice any of the following, please contact the Orthotics department as soon as possible on the telephone number at the top of this leaflet
- Skin redness that doesn’t fade after 15-20 minutes
- Sores or blisters on the skin
- Pain, irritation or rubbing
- Any damage to the helmet
Further appointments
You will be advised of the procedure for booking follow up appointments at the supply of the helmet. However, if you feel there are problems with the helmet you can ask to see the Orthotist for a review appointment by telephoning the Orthotics department where you had the original appointment.
