Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy - Fairfield Hospital [Bury], Bury Community

We provide assessment and treatment for patients who are referred by their GP with musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis, low back pain, and soft tissue injuries such as muscle strains or ligament injuries. We also treat patients referred by hospital consultants: most commonly from Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and A&E.

Physiotherapists will carry out an assessment and examination of the problem and then provide an individualised treatment plan.

Depending on the condition, Physiotherapy may include a number of different treatment approaches to assist in restoring movement and strength, manage pain and improve function.

The initial appointment will last approximately 40 minutes with subsequent follow-up treatment sessions usually 20 minutes. You will usually be seen in person but if preferred we can offer a video call or a telephone review. You should wear clothes that allow easy access to the affected body part (for example, a vest top for shoulder pain or shorts for a knee problem).

You will be asked questions about your current condition. These may include:

• The history of your condition

• Activities that affect your pain

• Medication

• Medical History

• Your occupation, hobbies or interests and how they are affected

You may also be asked general questions about your physical and mental health and wellbeing e.g. in relation to your weight and how physically active you are.

Following the initial assessment the physiotherapist will discuss a treatment plan with you. This will usually include:

  • An exercise programme for you to follow at home.
  • If indicated may include manual therapy to restore movement in stiff and painful joints.
  • Information and advice on how to access physical activity and exercise sessions within your local community.
