New Prayer Room opens at Royal Oldham

7 May 2025

We are delighted to have opened a newly refurbished and extended Prayer Room for colleagues, patients and visitors at The Royal Oldham Hospital.

The new facilities were opened by The Mayor of Oldham Councillor Zahid Chauhan and provides a larger space to meet the increasing demand for prayer facilities.

The space is located at: level -1 (minus 1) of the Sheepfoot Lane Building.  It can be accessed from the main hospital by following the direction signs or from the outside by entering the door nearest to Lucy Pugh outpatients and turning left down the corridor

Reverend Ian Inglis, chaplaincy and spiritual care manager at the Northern Care Alliance, said: “The prayer room is for anyone who wishes to use it. Primarily for Muslim use, people of other faiths are welcome to use the space for worship and reflection. This will provide a valuable space for all our colleagues, patients and members of the public to take time out to find some quiet peace, comfort and solitude during difficult moments, in particular.

“This is a place for people of any faith and also those who may not necessarily have a faith but need a moment of reflection.”

“A big thank you to our estates and facilities colleagues who have helped transform the previous iteration of the prayer room which was established over a decade ago to ensure it is fit for purpose for many years to come.”

Dr Zahid Chauhan, the Worshipful the Mayor of Oldham, said:

“Places like this prayer room serve as a reminder of the beauty of this country. We are so diverse, especially in Oldham, and we are allowed to observe our faith while respecting everyone else who may have different beliefs than us. A lot of effort and love has been put into the making of this room and I hope it will serve the community for many years to come.”

The prayer room is open seven days a week.
