There is not a special diet for people living with a urostomy, but these general guidelines may be helpful.
- Drink at least 10 -12 cups of fluid per day
- A high Vitamin ‘C’ intake will help to prevent urinary infections by making the urine more acidic. Food sources are far better than vitamin supplements as food supplies other nutrients as well as Vitamin ‘C’.
Do not have mega doses of Vitamin ‘C’ (maximum daily dose 1 gram) as these can increase the risk of developing kidney stones and can cause diarrhoea.
Foods containing source of Vitamin ‘C’
- Blackcurrants
- Blackcurrant cordial
- Cranberries
- Grapefruit
- Lemons
- Mandarins
- Oranges
- Redcurrants
Foods that may cause odour
- Asparagus
- Eggs
- Fish - boiled, fried or grilled
Foods that may colour urine
- Beetroot
- Berries
- Carrots
- Food dyes
- Radishes
- Spinach
Drugs that may colour urine
- Adriamycin
- Amitriphyline
- Dilantin
- Phenothiazines
- Senna
Food is just one of the things that may affect urostomy output.
Other things that may have an affect are physical and emotional feelings, any medication taken and other treatments received.
